Review The Secret Life of Pets (English)
After spending the last handful of years developing surefire hits in “Despicable Me 2” and “Minions,” animation powerhouse Illumination Entertainment returns to original material with “The Secret Lives of Pets,” or least keeps away from the moneymaking minions for a year.
The long shadow of Pixar darkens the picture, as much of the movie resembles a sneaky “Toy Story” remix, only instead of plastic cowboys and space rangers, the feature offers time with cats and dogs. Laughs are a rare event in “The Secret Life of Pets,” which is more determined to be loud, spotlighting screaming performances and frantic action that tends to drain the heart right out of the effort. It’s not a disaster, but after managing wit and speed with the surprisingly effective “Minions,” Illumination’s latest endeavor is a bit too desperate to please.
The pets of New York City have a special existence when their owners leave for the day, enjoying hobbies, food, and one another’s company, building friendships. Max (Louis C.K.) is an especially loyal dog to owner Katie (Ellie Kemper), but his reign as the only friend in his apartment comes to an end with the arrival of Duke (Eric Stonestreet), a massive pooch ready to mark his territory.
Competing for dominance, Max and Duke end up on the street, accidentally triggering the wrath of a gang of cats, which eventually attracts attention from the animal cops. Locked up and sent to the pound, travel is disrupted by rabbit Snowball (Kevin Hart) and his group of unloved animals, who share their underground realm with the bewildered dogs. Back at the apartment building, Max’s secret admirer, neighbor Gidget (Jenny Slate), embarks on a rescue mission, encountering the dubious ways of hawk Tiberius (Albert Brooks), who wants to help with the hunt.
“The Secret Life of Pets” surveys the general sway of an animal community, which requires a sizable population of creatures to study. Beyond Max, Duke, and Gidget, there are birds, cats, and even an alligator presented here, requiring the main story to be split into three subplots for easier management. Max and Duke’s misadventures are only a small part of the tale, though the dogs and their antagonisms are initially established as the focal point for the endeavor, with Duke, a desperate shelter dog, trying to keep his place in Katie’s apartment, threatening a confused Max.
It’s a fine tale of a reluctant partnership, with comedic one-upmanship holding attention as Max and Duke struggle to work out their differences, with the larger dog quickly asserting his power, leaving the little one to play dirty just to get rid of the beast.
